The A1 motorway was partially closed for traffic on Tuesday morning, following a serious accident heading in the direction of Luxembourg City. The stretch has been cleared and the route reopened.

The A1 motorway was closed from Potaschberg in direction of Luxembourg on Tuesday (12 March) due to a serious accident that happened last night.

According to emergency services, a lorry and a car collided just before 3.00 am, injuring two people.

Shortly after 6.00 am, the police confirmed that one of the victims — the car passenger — had passed away due to the injuries sustained, and that the car driver was in a critical state. The lorry driver is reportedly without serious injury.

Samu, the police, three ambulances, two fire engines and a team from the highway agency were sent to the site of the incident.

The motorway had been closed from Potaschberg onward, but one lane has been reopened at 8.20 am. Just before 9.30 am both lanes were open again.

The tailback caused by the accident had reportedly reached 12km in length.
