A lush haven of flora, located in Bonnevoie-Kaltreis, is marking a milestone this month. On 14th October 2023, from 2pm to 6pm, the Bonnevoie ‘Community Garden’ will be celebrating its tenth anniversary with an open day, an event that underscores a decade of eco-friendly gardening and community bonding.
Initiated by the City of Luxembourg in 2013, the community garden has become a sanctuary where neighbourhood residents cultivate not just plants and vegetables, but also friendships and a strong sense of community. Nestled at the corner of Rue Albert Steffen and Boulevard Kaltreis, the garden reflects the vibrant multiculturalism of the capital’s neighbourhoods.
The open day event is a golden opportunity for the general public to immerse themselves in the verdant spaces of the Bonnevoie community garden. Attendees will have the chance to engage with member gardeners, local residents, and city staff responsible for this blossoming initiative.
A guided visit to the garden offers a window into the eco-responsible approach adopted by the community. The gardens are nurtured without the use of pesticides, chemical fertilisers, or genetically modified organisms, thanks to the support and training provided by agronomic engineers and biologists from CIGL Esch.
Food enthusiasts can look forward to savouring small dishes, meticulously prepared by member gardeners using fresh produce plucked from the garden. The ceremonial cutting of the birthday cake, scheduled for 2pm, promises to be a highlight of the celebrations in presence of Luxembourg City officials.
The Bonnevoie initiative has inspired the establishment of four more community gardens across the city, with the Limpertsberg and Gare/Ville Haute gardens inaugurated in 2014, followed by the Pfaffenthal garden in 2017, and the Grund district garden in 2018. With around 200 active participants, these gardens are not just spaces for ecological gardening, but serve as thriving hubs of community engagement.
For those interested in joining the celebrations, the event is free of charge. It is accessible via AVL line 2 at the ‘Kaltreis’ stop.
