'Tis the seasonBeware of carpet (and other) scammers, say police

RTL Today
An individual was scammed by a carpet seller after responding to an ad in a daily newspaper.

Police explain that the service provider in question had published an ad in a Luxembourgish newspaper advertising cheap carpet cleaning services. Responding to the ad, the victim dropped off a Persian rug for cleaning, but never got it back.

Scammers are constantly inventing new tricks, police say, and warn against unreliable companies and false sales. The Grand Ducal Police recommends checking the provider thoroughly and to not allow customers or respondents to be pressured.

They also advise checking the details of the contract and prices before accepting any goods or services. It helps when companies are registered in Luxembourg. Additional information on scam attempts is available on this police website, which also lists several typical scams, ranging from the ‘grandson scam’ to sms scams and false lottery winnings, inheritance or donations.

Last week Luxembourg was experiencing a wave of telephone scams regarding ‘tax refunds’. In October scammers were posing as police officers.
