Scam warningBeware: scammers masquerading as police officers

RTL Today
The Grand Ducal police has issued a warning against scammers posing as police officers in order to dupe Luxembourg residents.

Whereas previously the scammers would approach their victims in person whilst wearing fake uniforms, now they have switched to contacting people by phone.

Often targeting elderly people, the scammers now call their victims, frequently speaking in German, to tell them their loved one has been implicated in a serious accident. They then insist that the victim must pay bail in order for their relative to be released, harassing the target until they agree to pay. The individuals then visit their target at home or at a predefined meeting spot in order to claim the money or the victim’s valuables.

The Grand Ducal police has issued a reminder that their officers will always speak Luxembourgish. In addition, this procedure does not exist in Luxembourg, and police officers would never demand bail in this sort of situation.

If ever there is any doubt about such contact, it is recommended that residents refer to their local police station. If you have received such phone calls or been a victim of a similar scam, always report it to the police. Finally, the Grand Ducal police also recommended speaking to elderly relatives or neighbours to warn them of these scams.
