For Chantal Maquet, running an animal boarding house is much more than just a job. She founded Lassie in July 2000 and, over the years, has transformed her initial project into a thriving business.
Today, Lassie is a large, well-equipped facility where an entire team ensures that every animal is well cared for during their owner's absence.
Surrounded by meadows and forests on the outskirts of Itzig, Lassie offers plenty of space for four-legged guests to roam and play and offers a true haven for animals needing temporary care.
While some might think working at an animal boarding house is all about playing with dogs and cats, the reality is far more complex.
The daily routine involves much more: animals need to be fed, their spaces must be cleaned, and staff must keep a close eye on their well-being.
Each animal comes with its own habits and needs; some require extra exercise, others more rest, and certain pets need special food or tailored attention.
Although people often associate animal boarding houses primarily with dogs and cats, Lassie caters to a much broader clientele. Horses, birds, and smaller pets are also welcome, requiring the team to adapt to the very different needs of each species.
Caring for a horse is very different from looking after a cat, and the needs of a small pet are not the same as those of a dog. This diversity means every day brings something new and requires flexibility from the staff.
Letting a beloved pet stay with strangers, even for a short time, can be difficult for many owners. That is why transparency is a top priority at Lassie.
Owners are encouraged to visit the facilities in advance and accompany their animal to its designated space. This way, they can see exactly where their dog, cat, or other pet will be spending its time while away from home.
For Chantal and her team, this trust comes with a great deal of responsibility. During the animals’ stay, they essentially step into the role of caretaker, ensuring each pet receives the same attention and affection it would get at home.
A typical day at Lassie is full: cleaning, feeding, organising, and keeping a watchful eye on all the animals. Yet, it is the special moments that make the work worthwhile, like seeing a dog’s excitement for an outdoor walk, a cat enjoying a gentle scratch, or a regular guest instantly recognising its favourite spot as soon as it arrives.
After more than 25 years, Lassie has become much more than a workplace for Chantal Maquet. Caring for animals is part of her daily life, and her passion for the job continues to inspire her every single day.
