No rest for the wicked: Scams remain a problem in Luxembourg in 2024.
The police confirm that they continue to receive reports of attempted fraud, so-called phishing scams, to obtain personal information, and extortion. These scams use text messages or emails to invite their targets to modify their personal data or to renew their social security card, as seen in the image shared by the police.
On Saturday, two people were victims of a scam according to the police. The police urges people to ignore and delete these messages, but should people suffer financial losses they should file a report with the police.
Some simple reflexes can help people detect these scams. Although scammers use the official logos of well-recognised institutions such as the CNS or the CCSS, the messages contain a link redirecting the user to a fraudulent website. It is crucial not to click on these links. Here’s the list of falsified website address and the sites that should be avoided with scams concerning the CNS.
Additionally, the police offers some helpful tips on how to avoid scams:
Always verify the identity of your correspondent. Refrain from engaging with strangers trying to sell you goods or services you do not need.
Before signing anything, read the entire document.
Never disclose your personal data to strangers.
Take your time to think! The more forceful the seller is, the more suspicious you should be.
Regularly change your password.
The police has also published information on the type of scams that tend to be reported in Luxembourg.
