Luxembourg's nine youth hostels are also affected by the crisis in the hospitality sector and report a massive drop in overnight stays.

In 2021, the youth hostels reported around 82,000 overnight stays, compared to roughly 160,000 in 2019. This 50% drop also led to a significant decrease in profits. On the other hand, the youth hostels registered 25,000 more overnight stays compared to 2020.

The Pfaffenthal Youth Hostel in Luxembourg City had the most customers, accounting for 40% of all overnight stays. Since the hostel is starting to reach its capacity, the Municipality of Luxembourg City is expanding and renovating two houses in Rue Vauban, which will eventually be used by the hostel.

Other major projects include the construction of a new youth hostel near the Ettelbruck railway station and the renovation of the hostel in Hollenfels.

The non-profit ‘Les Auberges de Jeunesse Luxembourgeoise’ was also happy to report during its national assembly that the construction and renovation works are making good progress on all sites. Besides the country’s nine youth hostels, the association also manages four crèches, three drop-in centres (maisons relais), and two youth centres.
