Anyone who has been out and about in the dyke meadows in Ettelbruck in recent weeks will have noticed the diggers rolling in front of the “Däichhal”. If you look closer, you’ll notice that the grass grid on the ground has been pulled out – not to renovate the car park, but to create a green area with trees. This transformation has resulted in the loss of around 300 parking spaces, though approximately 50 will be reinstated, according to Ettelbrück Mayor Jean-Paul Schaaf in a statement to RTL.

The project is part of a broader initiative by the municipality to introduce ‘more nature in our towns and villages.’ Launched by the Ministry of the Environment, the initiative ran from December 2022 to March 2023 and is subsidised by both the state and the European Union.

The aim of the greener space is to, among other things, prevent extreme heat in summer and increase biodiversity.

Before the works began, experts determined what consequences this would have on the use of the car park in the dyke area. According to their tests, the total parking space in Ettelbruck near the dyke hall was far from overwhelmed, even during peak times such as during the funfair. A major reason for this is the multi-storey car park which made it feasible to dispose of these 250 spaces.

Given the spaces that are now disappearing in front of the Deichhalle cost 20 cents per hour, the price of the parking spaces on the minus one level of the multi-storey car park have been reduced.
