The 56th edition of the popular procession will see around 5 tonnes of sweets and Carnival biscuits handed out to attendees. The Cavalcade first took place in Diekirch in 1870, on a Monday, but its current incarnation was launched in February 1979 to mark Carnival Sunday. Some 8-10 months of preparation are required to plan the event, which is organised by the “d’Eselen aus der Sauerstad” association. The budget reaches around €200,000 annually.
In 1991 and 2021, the procession was cancelled due to the Gulf War and coronavirus pandemic respectively.

DJs and performers will create a party atmosphere throughout the afternoon, with an after-party at the “Al Seeërei” cultural centre to keep the mood going until the early hours of the morning.
A number of roads will be closed to traffic around Diekirch until around 8pm, with shuttle bus services from Ettelbruck and Echternach available to visitors. Local buses will have diversions in place, with selected bus stops unavailable due to road closures.
