New Year's drinks at Communist Party of LuxembourgAn end to rent and higher taxation for banks and businesses: KPL

Two big claims, despite a critical look at 2019.

Social progress, climate justice, freedom and fundamentally socialist changes: these are the Communist Party's priorities as stated at their New Year's drinks in Belval on Friday.

The Communist Party had hopped on the bandwagon of every possible crisis, whether it be a social, economic, politic or ecologic one.

On an international level, the States had demonstrated quite the potential for conflict, and the EU did not provide a particularly favourable image either. Disagreements were abound, as were social inequalities, all phenomena that made themselves known at home as much as abroad, said Ali Ruckert, President of the party.

However these difficulties are also the reason why the KPL has come forth with a number of propositions to help solve them. One of these involves bringing an end to rent for two years, as accommodation is one the most pressing issues the country faces, and many residents can no longer afford to live here. Increasing taxation for banks and large businesses was also put forth as a necessity.

The Communist Party also appealed to the government not to use the climate crisis as an excuse to find solutions, the brunt of which would be borne by pensioners and wage workers while capitalist interests were not only protected, but promoted.

The money that is funnelled into military policies should also be invested, instead, into the wellbeing of Luxembourg's citizens: tax payers' money should not be "squandered" on rearmament proceedings, according to Ruckert.
