In late 2025, Nestlé discovered the first contamination of its formula powder in a factory in the Netherlands. At the start of January, infant milk products were recalled in more than 60 countries, including brands such as Beba, NAN and Alfamino. It is the largest recall in the company’s history.
In Luxembourg, authorities reacted accordingly. Since 6 January, the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration has recalled a total of 31 milk products for babies over contamination concerns. The toxin can cause diarrhoea, cramps and vomiting in infants, which can be fatal for some young children. The symptoms usually appear within 30 minutes to six hours after consumption.
Important: The recall notice only affects selected batches, full details of which can be found on the food safety website.
Nestlé, Danone and Lactalis have recalled large batches of formula around the world, including numerous European countries.
The contamination appears to have been traced back to one single international manufacturer which delivered the contaminated ingredient to a number of suppliers in Europe which produce formula. ALVA is already in contact with the relevant authorities and with the EU Commission.
Officially, there have been no cases of a baby falling ill following formula consumption in Luxembourg. If anyone should observe the symptoms in their child, they should consult a doctor as soon as possible. Vomiting and diarrhoea can quickly result in dehydration in babies.
To further protect citizens, ALVA has decided to introduce targeted checks to quickly detect any potential cereulide contamination across other infant products.
