In Luxembourg since the 1950s, the family business Alima, weakened by financial problems, will be taken over by Delhaize. The two remaining supermarkets in Luxembourg City (Bourse) and Belair (Avenue du dix septembre) are expected to close, after their shop in the Gare district was closed down a few months ago.
Although the announcement had already been broadcast by Luxembourgish media in December 2024, the date is now coming closer.
In a press release, Delhaize stated that all 37 Alima employees will retain their jobs, with assurances that their seniority and benefits will be recognized. The company aims to ensure a smooth transition for both staff and customers.
RTL Infos contacted Karima Ghozzi, the spokeswoman for Delhaize, who confirmed that the two new shops will open throughout the month of February.
As for the continuation of services until the new shops open, she confirmed the closing of the two Alima addresses “at the end of Saturday afternoon”. The two shops will then be shut for “minor construction” which should be finished by mid-February. Delhaize does not want to defamiliarise their clients by changing the shops drastically, any “considerable renovations” are not foreseen as of right now. “They will be done later on”, explained Karima Ghozzi.
“Tomorrow is our last day”, an employee told RTL Infos over the phone. The supermarket was offering significant discounts on all its products. The idea, of course, is to sell as much merchandise as possible before the supermarket’s permanent closure.
