The public is being advised to exercise caution when using ATMs and automated payment terminals after police reported a pattern of individuals being targeted by strangers offering help.
Luxembourg police have issued a warning following a series of reports involving individuals being approached at ATMs and other automated payment terminals.
The alert comes after several incidents in the south of the country. In one case on Friday, an unknown person approached an individual who was paying for a parking ticket in Esch-sur-Alzette. The stranger offered assistance, after which the victim's bank card became stuck in the machine. A subsequent, unauthorised withdrawal of a four-figure sum was made from the account.
On Saturday, police received further reports from multiple people in the southern region who were approached by strangers while using ATMs. Authorities believe the intent of these encounters is to observe and steal the victims' PIN codes.
In response, police are advising the public to take precautions. Citizens should always maintain physical control of their bank card and shield the keypad with their hand when entering a PIN. It is recommended to be wary of any strangers who approach during a transaction. If an individual is overly intrusive, they should be asked to keep their distance. If they refuse, the transaction should be cancelled immediately. Authorities also advise exercising particular caution if a card becomes stuck and a stranger immediately offers help.
Anyone who observes suspicious activity around ATMs or payment terminals is urged to contact the police by calling 113.
