Deputy Prime Minister Xavier Bettel represented Luxembourg at the 43rd UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand as the country campaigns to return to the organization’s Executive Board.

Luxembourg is vying for a seat on UNESCO's Executive Board, 20 years after it was last represented. As part of the campaign, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Xavier Bettel attended the 43rd UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from 4 to 5 November.

"Luxembourg's bid for a seat on UNESCO's Executive Board is a candidacy of dialogue, coexistence, and the shared determination to tackle global challenges together", Bettel said in his speech, highlighting the pressing issues the world currently faces. He pointed to climate change, the questioning of multilateralism, and the rise of nationalism as key challenges.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Luxembourg aims to focus on education, culture, multilingualism, and intercultural dialogue, information and communication, and science if elected to the Executive Board.

The UNESCO Executive Board election is scheduled for 7 November 2025.
