Police in Luxembourg were active on multiple fronts Monday, making several arrests connected to shoplifting, a traffic stop that uncovered a scam, and a series of car break-ins.
A series of police interventions across Luxembourg on Monday led to multiple arrests.
Around midday, police were notified of a shoplifting incident at a business in the capital. A patrol apprehended two suspects shortly thereafter. During the check, one of the individuals was found to be the subject of an international arrest warrant. Following orders from the public prosecutor's office, the suspect was arrested and brought before an examining magistrate that same afternoon.
In a simultaneous but unrelated event, another shoplifting incident was reported at a shop in Kirchberg. Officers located the suspect on site and confiscated several stolen bottles of alcohol. On the orders of the public prosecutor's office, the alleged thief was arrested and brought before an examining magistrate on Tuesday morning.
In a separate matter on Monday evening, a police patrol in Esch-sur-Alzette stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. The driver was unable to produce a licence, and a subsequent check revealed a stolen credit card inside the vehicle. Both the driver and passenger were taken to the police station for further investigation.
A body search of the driver led to the seizure of cash, drugs, a mobile phone, and a second stolen bank card. The investigation linked the cards to a scam in which the victim had been contacted by individuals posing as Luxtrust employees. The public prosecutor's office ordered a search of the driver's home, where two other mobile phones were confiscated.
An identity check of the passenger revealed an outstanding arrest warrant, leading to their transfer to the Uerschterhaff Penitentiary Centre in Sanem.
Police also reported several thefts from vehicles on Monday.
In the afternoon, in a Leudelange car park on Rue de la Gare, unknown individuals broke a car window and stole a laptop and cash.
Later, in Luxembourg City on Rue du Cents, a backpack was stolen from a car in a similar manner.
Investigations into both cases are ongoing.
