Visitors will have the chance to explore Luxembourg's landscapes, mines, and mineral collections during a series of free events on 4 October.

Luxembourg will mark International Geodiversity Day on Saturday, 4 October, with a series of events highlighting the country’s rich geological heritage. The annual celebration, proclaimed by UNESCO in 2021, aims to raise awareness of the Earth's diverse geological features and the vital role they play in sustaining life.

Several prominent institutions have joined forces for this year's celebrations, including the Mullerthal UNESCO Global Geopark, the Minett UNESCO Biosphere, the Luxembourg Commission for UNESCO, and the National Museum of Natural History. Together, they are offering free guided walks, tours, and exhibitions.

At the Mullerthal UNESCO Global Geopark, the focus will be on the 'Al Schmelz' geosite in Fischbach. From 10.30am to 12.30pm, geologist Birgit Kausch will lead a 5km hike through the village's industrial past and geological heritage, tracing its history as one of Luxembourg's key industrial centres during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Meanwhile, the Minett UNESCO Biosphere will host a 2.5km hike along the Giele Botter ("yellow butter") geological circuit from 10am to 1pm with Professor Jean-Frank Wagner from the University of Trier who will explore the region's former open-pit mines and abandoned galleries. Here, the focus lies on the formation of southern Luxembourg's iron ore deposits.

In Goesdorf, participants can join a guided hike on the plateau as part of the Sous nos pieds ("under our feet") project. Mineralogist Kim Totaro will provide insights into the local antimony mining heritage, including the old forge and drainage galleries.

The National Museum of Natural History Luxembourg will unveil its newly renovated treasure room, featuring 20 showcases that illustrate the connection between research and collection, including rare minerals, as well as scientific missions in Luxembourg, Brazil, and Mozambique.

All events are free, though registration is required. For the full programme, visit www.minett-biosphere.lu.
