A 32-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of committing a vast number of car break-ins on the border between Luxembourg and Germany since February 2025.
For months, the unidentified thief had succeeded in stealing valuables out of parked cars in the Südeifel and Trier-Saarburg regions close to the Luxembourg border.
Police in Bitburg conducted an investigation in collaboration with the Wittlich criminal police department and a police super-recogniser over the past few months, and ultimately were able to identify a suspect. The individual in question did not have a fixed address and moved from place to place around the border regions, allowing him to fly under the radar. Thanks to a permanent information exchange with Luxembourg police, it was established over the course of the investigation that the suspect was also responsible for a number of thefts in the Grand Duchy.
On Tuesday evening, Bitburg police succeeded in taking the thief into custody in Minden. He stands accused of carrying out a number of vehicle break-ins throughout the region. On Friday, he was brought before a judge in Trier, before being transferred to prison.
The authorities thanked the public for supplying useful information which helped them to establish a profile for the thief which ultimately led to his arrest.
