The European Commission has proposed sanctions against extremist Israeli settlers and government members, a move that Luxembourg's Prime Minister supports "in broad strokes".

Prime Minister Luc Frieden has stated that Luxembourg supports the European Commission's proposals "in broad strokes" for sanctions against Israel.

At present, however, Germany in particular hesitates to support the idea.

The proposals, announced on Wednesday, target extremist members of the Israeli government, violent Israeli settlers, but also Hamas members. They also include a suspension of trade advantages with Israel.

Prime Minister Frieden expressed his support during a press conference at Senningen Castle on Wednesday afternoon, where he was hosting European Council President António Costa.

While both leaders condemned the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023 as "unacceptable", they acknowledged that the Israeli government's military response in Gaza has "gone too far."

Despite potential disagreements within the EU, both leaders expressed confidence that the bloc would still make progress on the matter, even if not all member states agree to the sanctions.
