The Ministry of Health announced on Thursday that cyanobacteria had been detected in certain parts of the Moselle.
A significant blue algae issue was reported near Koblenz in Germany, leading to local alerts. Authorities in Luxembourg responded by testing the waters of the Moselle river where it flows through the Grand Duchy.
LIST analysis confirmed the presence of blue algae in the Moselle, although it was said to be largely restricted to the riverbanks and areas where the water is stagnant. More information can be found at cyanwatch.lu. Areas in Schwebsange, Machtum and Wasserbillig are more affected by the cyanobacteria as the water flow is slower in these parts.
The situation in Luxembourg is said to cause no concern just yet, but the public are advised to exercise caution and stick to hygiene recommendations, particularly for those who fish in the Moselle or take their dogs to the river.
Blue algae is a type of bacteria that is frequently present in Luxembourg's waters. In certain conditions, such as warmer temperature or when the water current is slow, the bacteria can spread rapidly, forming blue-green carpets on the water.
In high concentrations, the algae can produce toxins which are dangerous to humans and animals if they come into direct contact with the skin. Symptoms range from skin irritation to headaches and nausea to cramps, paralysis and liver damage. It is advised not to enter the water if it is discoloured, and under no circumstances should the river water be swallowed.
