Meteolux confirmed Tuesday that Luxembourg’s current heatwave will persist until at least Friday, with additional temperature alerts likely.
The national weather service attributed the prolonged warmth to a significant shift in atmospheric pressure systems across Europe.
Last week, a low-pressure system over the North Sea had blocked warm air from the south.
The current pattern now features high pressure over Eastern Europe and low pressure west of Iberia, creating a southerly airflow that is channelling hot air from southwest Europe into the region.
While models suggest above-average temperatures may continue until 21–25 August, Luca Mathias from Meteolux cautioned that long-term predictions remain unreliable. “Although some indicators point towards normalisation afterwards, the level of uncertainty is still considerable”, he explained.
