A police officer was sentenced to 15 months in prison, in a suspended sentence, and fined €5,000 for a sexual assault offence at a Luxembourg wine festival last year.

A civil party will receive €3,000 in damages, according to the court press office on Thursday.

The case dates back to the night of 9-10 August 2024, when the defendant was accused of sexually assaulting the victim outside a tent at the Picadilly wine festival in Stadtbredimus. The attacker and victim are said to have been unknown to each other prior to the event. As the defendant was a police officer, the police general inspectorate also investigated the matter. The district court handed down its initial verdict on 9 July 2025.

Separate incidents

The case is not to be confused with another case of sexual assault at the same festival, in which a 17-year-old girl was raped a day later. This case is yet to be solved and the offender was not identified. On 22 July this year, the case was closed "ad acta" as there was insufficient evidence to uncover the attacker's identity, nor were there any witnesses. The victim has since written to the Attorney General to disagree with this decision.

The case will be analysed once more before the public prosecutor's office decides whether to reopen the investigation.
