The mayor of Steinsel has announced he will resign from his position, and also from politics completely, paving the way for younger politicians like Manon Kolber-Hoffman, who has confirmed her interest in the position.
Upon RTL's request, the current mayor of Steinsel, Fernand Marchetti, confirmed that he would resign from his position as mayor and stop all political engagements. He has two files left at the commune which he wants to finish before ending his political career, possibly at the end of this month. The 76-year-old Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) politician took over the management of the Steinsel commune in 2022, as the successor to Jempi Klein. Before becoming mayor he was the second deputy mayor since 2011. Preceding his career as deputy mayor, he was a communal secretary in Steinsel for over 30 years. Fernand Marchetti announced taking a step back due to old age.
The mayor's successor could potentially provoke a generational shift. The 40-year-old LSAP adviser Manon Kolber-Hoffman confirmed her interest in the position. During the communal elections in 2023, she ranked sixth place on the LSAP list, thus narrowly missing a seat in the local council. In early 2024, she took the place of her party colleague Monique Feltgen.
The local council has not yet decided on a date to vote for a new mayor. Steinsel consists of a coalition of LSAP and the Democratic Party (DP), occupying nine out of 11 seats. The coalition agreement foresees that LSAP with their five mandates has to provide a mayor during their whole legislative period. DP has four advisers and provides two deputy mayors, namely Siggy Rausch and Claude Schintgen. The remaining two seats are filled by the Christian Social People's Party and the Green Party.
