Déi Lénk (Left Party) has accused the Democratic Party (DP) and coalition partner the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) of favouring private developers with their proposed housing law reforms, warning the measures will fail to deliver sufficient affordable homes.
Luxembourg's Left Party voiced strong criticism during a press conference on Friday, 4 April, following the presentation of new amendments to Luxembourg’s affordable housing law by DP housing minister Claude Meisch.
According to Déi Lénk, the proposed measures will fall short of delivering the expected number of affordable apartments. The party is particularly critical of a provision allowing private developers to participate in affordable housing projects through public-private partnerships. They argue this benefits what they call the government's "developer friends."
To address the housing crisis, Déi Lénk is calling for the introduction of a rent cap. In the long term, they propose that each commune be required to maintain a fixed number of affordable rental units.
