The second day of the OGBL's national congress took place on Saturday at Luxexpo in Kirchberg.
Nora Back was re-elected with an overwhelming 97.88% of the vote on Friday, securing another five-year term at Luxembourg's largest trade union. In a speech delivered on Saturday, she expressed growing concern over the current government's attitude towards organised labour.
Back also highlighted the unprecedented invitation of LCGB president Patrick Dury and secretary general Fränz Lomel. In times like these, she added, collaboration is absolutely necessary. After all, many people seem to be wary of the 'social coldness' exuded by the CSV-DP coalition government. Since the coalition took office, OGBL has seen its membership increase by 10,000, bringing its total to 77,000 members. A success that Back said is to be lacking with the government.
Turning to the current debates of European security, Back reaffirmed the OGBL's solidarity with Ukraine and called for a strong, independent European defence and industrial foundation. However, she warned against the current hype promoting a war-ready Europe. As a union, the OGBL refuses to join the hype around militarisation – given that history has shown that it is working people, pensioners, and their families who face the most suffering.
In other news, OGBL and LCGB have announced plans for a major national demonstration to be held on 28 June.
