In their continued fight against the proposed liberalisation of retail sector opening hours, the OGBL and LCGB unions rallied over 300 supporters on Thursday, building momentum for a broader campaign to protect workers' rights and work-life balance.

Following a demonstration on Wednesday in front of the Chamber of Deputies, the Independent Luxembourg Trade Union Confederation (OGBL) and the Luxembourg Confederation of Christian Trade Unions (LCGB) joined forces again on Thursday at the Chamber of Employees in Bonnevoie. The unions are intensifying their campaign against the proposed liberalisation of retail sector opening hours.

Under the slogan, "Hands off our Sundays, our public holidays, our working hours", the OGBL-LCGB union front addressed a crowd of over 300 people. The unions emphasised that the issue extends beyond working hours, impacting the personal and family lives of more than 50,000 employees. According to the unions, the majority of these workers oppose extending shop opening hours, arguing that such changes would disrupt their work-life balance.

The unions also warned that the liberalisation could have a ripple effect, potentially affecting other sectors such as cleaning, security, and childcare in the future.

In a bid to galvanise public support, the union front has announced a major national protest scheduled for 28 June. In the meantime, further actions are planned, including events on Valentine's Day and at major railway stations, to raise awareness and mobilise the population against the proposed changes.
