During the year’s first CityBreakfast conference, it was revealed that Luxembourg City had a population of 136,208 in 2024, with 70% of its residents holding foreign nationalities.

On 31 December 2024, Luxembourg City recorded a population of 136,208 residents, marking an increase of nearly 1,500 compared to the previous year.

The figure was revealed during the year's first CityBreakfast, a monthly meeting between the capital's key municipal decision-makers and the press, held on Tuesday morning. Local officials typically use the first press conference of the year as an opportunity to share key statistics on residents such as births, deaths, and other demographic data.

Approximately 30% of the capital's residents are Luxembourg nationals, while the remaining 70% hold foreign nationalities. Despite this, Luxembourg nationals form the largest community, with around 40,000 residents, followed by French and Portuguese nationals.

During the press conference, local officials also announced several new initiatives and changes.

Pedibus, the "Walking Bus" programme, which accompanies children on their way to school, will be expanded with six additional routes: two in Kirchberg and four in Limpertsberg. The municipality is currently seeking chaperones to assist with the programme. Further details can be found at pedibus.vdl.lu.

Additionally, as of 1 January 2025, the municipality has taken over the "Meals on Wheels" service, which provides home-delivered meals to individuals over 65 or those with mobility restrictions due to health issues. The service costs €15 per meal, and in its first week, an average of 145 meals were delivered daily, with around 190 customers currently registered.

In a move to reduce waste, the municipality has also introduced a registration system for its magazine, Ons Stad. Previously distributed free of charge to all households of the capital twice a year, the magazine will now only be sent to those who register via abo4onsstad.vdl.lu. Registered recipients will continue to receive the publication at no cost.
