Winter sales kick off on Thursday in Luxembourg and parts of the Greater Region, offering shoppers discounts in-store and online until late January.
Luxembourg's highly anticipated winter sales begin this Thursday, 2 January, and will run until Saturday, 25 January. Shoppers can take advantage of discounts both in-store and online.
However, consumers are advised to stay vigilant. The Guichet.lu website reminds shoppers to be cautious of illegal practices such as fake sales, where "discounted" prices match the usual prices, or unclear discount displays (-20%, -30%, etc). For more details on prohibited practices, you can find their guidance here.
Looking ahead, the summer sales in Luxembourg will start on Friday, 27 June, and end on Saturday, 26 July, offering an extra weekend compared to previous years.
Sales across the Greater Region
In Lorraine, Moselle and Meurthe-et-Moselle, the winter sales are due to start this Thursday, 2 January, to coincide with those in Luxembourg. The Lorraine departments will take advantage of their usual exemption, allowing them to begin earlier than the rest of France to better compete with Luxembourg. The sales in Lorraine will also outlast those in Luxembourg, running until Wednesday, 29 January.
In Belgium, sales will kick off one day later than in Lorraine and Luxembourg, starting on Friday, 3 January. However, they will extend slightly longer, wrapping up on Friday, 31 January.
Germany, for its part, has no official sales period scheduled. Sales regulations have been abolished, largely due to the rise of online shopping. While there is no legislation governing sales dates, retailers frequently offer discounts throughout the year. That said, promotions are traditionally abundant from late December through late January.
