The Pirate Party has voiced strong opposition to the proposal by Luxembourg's military chief to reintroduce compulsory military service.
The Pirate Party announced on Thursday that it opposes the proposal by the head of the Luxembourg Army to consider reintroducing compulsory military service in the country.
In a statement, the opposition party firmly rejected the idea of mandatory service, calling the discussion "inappropriate." The Pirate Party emphasised that it is the government's responsibility to explore ways to improve recruitment efforts. The party also announced plans to present this stance in the Chamber of Deputies and intends to submit a motion during the next public session.
The statement follows remarks made by General Steve Thull in a recent interview with our colleagues from RTL Radio, where he suggested revisiting the idea of compulsory military service.
Earlier in July, Minister of Defence Yuriko Backes commented in a newspaper interview that while military service was not included in the coalition agreement, she believes that the discussion, both in Luxembourg and other European countries, is inevitable.
The Pirate Party concluded their statement with a message to lawmakers: "Improve the conditions and make the profession more attractive but let people choose freely."
