Luxembourg MPs approved changes to the agricultural law which will, among other things, extend grants to elderly farmers and winemakers.
On Thursday, the vast majority of MPs in the Chamber of Deputies approved amendments to the agricultural law of 2023.
Among other things, a broader pool of applicants will now be eligible for certain grants. Farmers and winemakers who are either over the age of 72 or retired may once again apply for these grants, as was already the case in the past, rapporteur Octavie Modert of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) explained.
MP Luc Emering of the Democratic Party (DP) also praised the change. During his time as president of the Young Farmers Association, Emering and his association petitioned for former Minister of Agriculture Claude Haagen to adjust the agricultural law in the interest of farmers. Their efforts also included more striking initiatives, such as the "Red Boots Campaign".
The relationship between farmers and politicians appears to have improved under the new government. Minister of Agriculture Martine Hansen welcomed the fact that a majority of MPs voted in favour of the amendments.
