Laurent Schwaller, Chef de Service at Ville de Luxembourg, spoke to Melissa Dalton, host of the eponymous show on Today Radio, ahead of the opening about the months of preparation that go into this annual event.

Winterlights Festival & Christmas Markets 2024

“It’s a process throughout the year,” said Schwaller. “After the event is before the event.” The festival, which includes traditional Christmas markets, ice skating, and illuminated decorations, is one of the city’s highlights, drawing both locals and international visitors.

New additions this year include an enhanced Winterkids area at Place Guillaume II, tailored for families with children. The revamped space will offer workshops, concerts, puppet shows, and other activities specifically designed for younger audiences. “It’s more family-focused,” Schwaller explained, noting the expanded programme runs daily except Mondays from 7 December until the end of the year.

For adults, popular attractions like the Christmas markets at Place d’Armes and Gëlle Fra return, alongside the open-air ice skating rink at Kinnekswiss. Schwaller also highlighted the festive atmosphere at the markets, with unique themes, live DJs, and the much-photographed light displays, including an “XXL gift” at the Gare district.
