The Ministries of Justice and the Interior are considering alternatives for prisoner transport to allow police officers to focus on other duties.

These concerns were raised in a parliamentary question by the LSAP.

Currently, prisoner transport is handled by the Surveillance and Operational Support Unit. While the system is functioning efficiently, it places significant demands on personnel.

Over the past 12 months, 1,838 prisoner transfers were conducted, including movements between the prisons at Schrassig and Uerschterhaff, court appointments, and medical visits – an average of five transfers per day.

Given the high resource requirements, the ministries are now exploring alternative solutions to ease the workload on police officers and reallocate their efforts to other critical missions. Discussions on potential changes are ongoing.
