The care sector in Luxembourg is grappling with severe staffing shortages, with the umbrella organisation for care providers warning that 900 new nurses will be needed over the next five years to meet demand.

COPAS, the umbrella organisation for care providers in Luxembourg, has raised concerns about a growing staff shortage in the country's care sector. The organisation highlights significant gaps in the availability of nurses and caregivers, with many positions already unfilled.

Over the next five years, Luxembourg will need to recruit 900 new nurses, but COPAS warns that not enough people are entering the profession. According to COPAS, only 68 students graduated with a Higher Technician Certificate (BTS) qualifying them to work as nurses at the end of the last academic year.

This shortage means that Luxembourg is reliant on workers from the Greater Region. However, COPAS cautions that neighbouring countries are also making efforts to retain their healthcare staff.

COPAS has called for greater efforts to make the nursing profession more attractive. To discuss potential solutions, a major roundtable discussion took place on Thursday.
