As Luxembourg marks World Stroke Day, Chantal Keller of the Blëtz association highlights the alarming frequency of strokes and the importance of timely intervention.

Tuesday marks World Stroke Day, and on this occasion, Chantal Keller, president of the 'Blëtz' ('lightning') association, spoke with RTL Radio this morning about stroke, one of the leading causes of death in Luxembourg.

Keller, who herself is a stroke survivor, has been dedicated to supporting those affected by strokes and promoting prevention since 2013 through her work with the Blëtz association. Stroke is the leading cause of disability among adults and continues to be a significant cause of mortality in Luxembourg.

According to Keller, "every day, four people in Luxembourg suffer a stroke, and often these individuals react far too late. Doctors frequently express their concerns during our discussions."

Many patients are unaware they are having a stroke, despite the typically clear signs. These include transient ischemic attacks, which are risk factors for subsequent strokes or heart attacks. Clear indicators of a stroke can include facial drooping, difficulty speaking, balance problems, and a lack of responsiveness in one arm.

In such situations, Keller advises individuals to immediately dial emergency number 112. Prompt treatment can prevent irreversible consequences, she emphasised. Additionally, providing a list of any medications the victim is taking can assist neurologists in assessing their condition.

Healthy lifestyle as the best prevention

Keller noted an alarming trend: more young people are experiencing strokes today. She attributed this partly to rising poverty levels, which can limit access to healthy food options.

The primary risk factors for stroke include high blood pressure, smoking, abdominal obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, and diabetes.

To mitigate these risks, Keller emphasised that adopting a healthy lifestyle is crucial. Simple steps such as engaging in regular physical activity and maintaining a balanced diet can significantly reduce the likelihood of a stroke.
