At the EU summit in Brussels, Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden indicated a shift in his views on a NATO expansion, declaring that Ukraine's request to join NATO is legitimate.
Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden stated that his perspective on NATO expansion has evolved over the past decade due to the changing circumstances brought about by the war in Ukraine.
During an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday, Frieden emphasised that Ukraine's request to join NATO is legitimate. He acknowledged that he had previously advocated for a buffer zone, however, in light of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, he believes it is now logical for all countries bordering Russia to be admitted to NATO. Frieden added that the security architecture in Europe would need to be redefined post-war, and that NATO expansion would likely be viewed differently in this new context.
Frieden underscored the importance of supporting Ukraine, stating that the country could not be left to face the conflict alone. While the situation has changed significantly due to the war, he noted that Ukraine must still meet certain conditions for NATO membership. Nevertheless, Frieden pointed out that Ukraine is currently already treated as a very close partner of NATO.
