An accidental gun discharge at a police station in Esch-sur-Alzette was the result of an individual handling error, Minister for Home Affairs Léon Gloden confirmed in response to a parliamentary question.
Minister for Home Affairs Léon Gloden has confirmed that a firearm was accidentally discharged inside a police station in Esch-sur-Alzette.
Responding to a parliamentary question from Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) MP Dan Biancalana on Tuesday, Minister Gloden confirmed the incident, attributing it to "an individual error by a police officer in handling a service weapon."
The accidental discharge did not result in any injuries, though the shot allegedly penetrated the vault door inside the station, which Biancalana deemed "concerning." Every police station in Luxembourg is equipped with secure facilities specifically designed for loading and unloading firearms.
When asked by Biancalana whether the vault's doors and storage units met the necessary security standards to protect staff in such situations, Minister Gloden reassured that they do, emphasising that the incident was due to "an individual handling error," not an infrastructure failure.
In line with standard protocol, the incident was immediately reported to the General Police Inspectorate (IGP), which launched an administrative investigation. The IGP's investigation confirmed the sequence of events, and the police will now review and consider its recommendations regarding the handling of service weapons.
Despite the incident, Minister Gloden highlighted that police officers conduct "hundreds of operations involving the loading and unloading of service weapons every day without incident." He added that, in his view, there is no need to question the current weapons training procedures.
