For pope Francis' official visit to Luxembourg on Thursday, between 10am and 6.15pm the police have planned a large-scale security operation. Here is the most recent information.
Around 10,000 people are expected to congregate in the capital for the Pope's visit on Thursday 26 September, and the police are making extensive efforts to manage traffic and ensure the security of everyone attending. An increased police presence has been planned, and Belgian police will assist, thanks to the Benelux treaty that enables such cross-border cooperation.
As a general precaution, attendees are advised to remain vigilant about their belongings due to potential pickpockets. Preventive tips can be found on the police website.
Any suspicious persons or objects should be reported immediately to police officers present at the event or by calling 113. The public is also advised not to leave personal items (purses, backpacks, etc.) unattended in public areas.
Those attending the official meeting at the cathedral will undergo security checks at the designated meeting point on Glacis Square. Prohibited items inside the cathedral include sharp objects (e.g., knives), backpacks, briefcases, large handbags, cameras, flags, umbrellas, and strollers (this list is non-exhaustive). Mobile phones and tablets must be turned off during the event.
Additionally, drones will be deployed by the police to monitor the area and relay audio messages in case of incidents. The use of any non-police drones is strictly prohibited.
Traffic and parking changes
Traffic and parking restrictions will be in place in the city center, starting from the evening of 25 September. Full details can be found on the City of Luxembourg website. Given the closure of certain public parking lots on 26 September, it's recommended to check the availability of parking spaces in advance.
For travel within the city, public transportation is strongly encouraged. Any changes or updates can be found via this link.
