The decision, which Daman shared during the most recent municipal council meeting, was driven by the difficulty of balancing his professional responsibilities, private life, and the demanding role of mayor.
Weiswampach mayor Claude Daman has announced his resignation.
Daman admitted he had underestimated the time commitment required for the position: "I misjudged the time, definitely my time management. I didn’t realise how much time being the mayor of a municipality really takes. The week just flies by. Many meetings happen outside normal office hours."
Although he was entitled to 13 to 15 hours of political leave, Daman often found himself working 30-35 additional hours per week for the municipality, which has nearly 2,500 residents. This, combined with his professional work, left him with very little time for his family and children.
"You have to resign now, or you'll make the biggest mistake of your life—missing out on seeing your children grow up," Daman remarked.
His decision to step down was not made lightly. Daman will leave both the mayoral post and the municipal council once a successor is chosen. Until then, the deputy mayor will manage municipal affairs.
In the last municipal election, Daman received the most votes with 561, followed by Mike Hahn (509), and Néckel Polfer, who received 444 votes. Mario Dichter was the fifth-elected. It remains unclear who will succeed Daman as mayor.
