The Ministry of Mobility has refuted claims made by the LCGB union, asserting that flight safety is not at risk following a recent announcement from the EU aviation authority.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Ministry of Mobility addressed concerns raised by the Luxembourg Confederation of Christian Trade Unions (LCGB) concerning potential changes to pilot requirements proposed by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

The controversy centres around a proposal from the EASA that is under consideration, which could potentially reduce the number of pilots required during specific phases of commercial flights. The Ministry emphasised that no decision has been made by Minister Yuriko Backes on how Luxembourg would respond to this proposal if it were to be implemented.

The Ministry further clarified that there would always be two pilots on board during critical flight phases, such as take-off and landing. The proposal, if adopted, would only apply to long-haul flights with extended cruising periods.

As a result, Luxair flights, which are primarily short- and medium-haul, would not be affected by this potential change.
