Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden has confirmed he will nominate the CSV's Christophe Hansen to serve as the Grand Duchy's EU commissioner for the upcoming EU parliamentary term.

Frieden announced on social media platform X that he had had an "excellent discussion" with Commission president Ursula von der Leyen regarding the country's next commissioner. In the meeting, Frieden suggested current CSV MEP Christophe Hansen for the role, as stated in the framework of the current CSV-DP government formation.

The Prime Minister said Hansen possessed "extensive experience" at EU level and had the necessary background for the position.

Recently, European media speculated that Luxembourg could be awarded responsibility for the EU's agriculture and development commission, although this is yet to be confirmed and has not yet been approved by the relevant authorities.

Hansen will replace the current Luxembourg EU Commissioner, the LSAP's Nicolas Schmit, who entered the race as the lead candidate for Europe's Social Democrats.

Luxembourg is one of the last EU countries to propose a candidate for the Commission.
