Luxembourg's residents are increasingly embracing holiday travel. In 2023 alone, they embarked on 2.8 million trips, with 92% of these being holidays within Europe, Statec data shows.

A significant portion, 41%, were to neighbouring countries—France, Germany, or Belgium. The average cost of an overnight stay within the Grand Duchy was just under €170, contributing to a total of 3.5 million overnight stays registered in Luxembourg's 211 hotels and hostels.

On an EU level, Luxembourgers rank third in terms of stays per resident per year, behind Sweden (7) and Finland (9). When looking at the total touristic nights per year, Luxembourg residents rank first in the European Union, at 35.

At the bottom of the ranking is Bulgaria with 3 nights. In neighbouring countries, 11 nights were registered for Belgium and 16 to 18 nights for France, Germany and the Netherlands.

When it comes to transportation, Luxembourgish residents prefer their own cars, followed by air travel. Between 7 and 9% of all trips have Spain, Portugal or Italy as their destination. 8% are outside of the EU.

On average, Luxembourgers spend around €1,190 on a holiday, data by the statistics agency shows. 26% is spent on transport, 34% on accommodation and 40% on food, activities and shopping.

Luxembourg residents spent 3.381 billion euros in 2022, 89 million more than in 2021. 2.891 billion euros were spent outside Luxembourg's borders in 2022, 86% of the total figure.

Additionally, 450,000 business trips were made annually, each lasting an average of seven days, with accommodation costs averaging €327.

However, a portion of the population, mainly older residents with little or no income, did not travel at all.
