The Water Management Authority has extended the swimming ban to Rommwiss and Burfelt beaches following the discovery of blue algae in the Upper-Sûre Lake this week.
Visitors are advised to avoid all contact with the lake water. This equally applies to dogs and other pets.
Cyanobacteria, otherwise known as blue algae, can pose a health risk to humans and animals, and may trigger health issues including but not restricted to ‘disorders related to contact, ingestion or inhalation of these substances are of variable nature and intensity and may include, for example, headaches, skin irritation and/or burns or nausea’.
As it stands, swimming is still permitted at other beaches around the lake, as well as other popular swimming spots including Echternach lake, Remerschen ponds and Weiswampach lake.
