Meteolux has upgraded its weather alert status to orange for Monday afternoon from 6pm until 10pm, ahead of thunderstorms.
Monday starts off sunny with an afternoon of clouds and temperatures of 27 degrees in some parts of the country. However, the weather is expected to take a turn for the worse in the evening as thunderstorms are set to batter the Grand Duchy.
At 6pm, winds are expected to pick up speeds of 70 to 90 km/h, with a combination of rain and hail. Meteolux further warns that rainfall is expected to reach 25 to 40 litres per square metre within a short period of time.
Orange alerts for thunderstorms can typically mean a risk of local flooding to basements and low-lying areas, as well as the potential for fires following lightning strikes, and other material damage.
Residents are advised to tidy away or protect items such as garden furniture; avoid going for walks in wooded areas, and must not take shelter beneath trees.
Luxembourg City council published a notice on social media warning residents to avoid local parks and wooded areas after 6pm due to the weather alert.
