Luxembourg's Veterinary and Food Administration announced Wednesday that Sammy, the wallaby who eluded capture for two weeks, died from a rare bacterial infection.

The Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA) on Wednesday announced that Sammy, the runaway wallaby that recently kept Luxembourg on its toes for two weeks, died of a rare bacterial infection. On Tuesday, news of Sammy's death at his home had been confirmed, though no details were initially shared.

On Wednesday, the Agriculture Ministry issued a statement revealing that the wallaby died on 25 June due to a severe bacterial infection: "The analysis conducted by a professional veterinary laboratory following its capture revealed that the wallaby was suffering from a rare and hard-to-treat bacterial infection that led to his death."

This same infection was also found in two other wallabies, a mother and a youngling, belonging to the same owner. The younger animal did not survive the infection, but the mother was treated successfully.
