The connection between Trier and Luxembourg is being further expanded to simplify (and speed up) commuting across the border - adding a line that had previously only been available for freight traffic.
Work is currently underway on the 'Weststreck' to improve the connection between Trier and Luxembourg by the end of the year.
The mayor of Trier, Wolfram Leibe, announced on Monday that the project is progressing well and the route should be operational by December.
In the future, passenger trains will run twice an hour between Wittlich and Luxembourg station, four times per hour between Trier and Luxembourg as well as between Schweich and Saarburg. This will significantly improve Trier's connectivity with Luxembourg.
Until now, the route between Wittlich and Luxembourg was only open for freight traffic.
Mayor Leibe emphasised that this improvement will be a major benefit especially for cross-border commuters and students.
