The German Federal Police Directorate in Koblenz is expecting heavy traffic on the borders with France, Luxembourg and Belgium on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“Due to the upcoming European Championship matches, an increase in traffic in the border area is expected,” warned the German federal police on Monday. This week sees a host of crucial matches in the Euros as teams battle to qualify for the round of 16.
On Tuesday 25 June France will play Poland in Dortmund, followed by Belgium's clash with Ukraine on Wednesday. These fixtures are likely to result in heavy road traffic on Germany's borders with France, Belgium and Luxembourg as fans travel to and from the games.
“We therefore expect an increase in traffic on the main transport routes to Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland,” German police said on Monday. Travellers are advised to take this information into account and plan accordingly. It is likely the traffic will also impact cross-border workers as well as football supporters.
Random checks will be carried out at borders to prevent an influx of violent hooligans as well as politically motivated rioters, say German police. The Federal Police Directorate in Koblenz said it planned to take "all necessary measures" to avoid disproportionately overloading traffic.
In Luxembourg, the police checks at the borders come at an inopportune time, clashing with a number of roadworks along the border with Germany, which is already complicating travel during rush hour.
