Luxembourg City's National Day celebrations once again featured a grand military and civil parade on Avenue de la Liberté, with dignitaries including the Grand Duke and government ministers in attendance.
Like every year, the National Day military and civil parade represented one of the highlights of festivities in Luxembourg City on Sunday. A total of 800 active participants from the military, the police, customs, prison wardens, the Red Cross, and the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) paraded through Avenue de la Liberté, and free admission ensured that there were plenty of spectators. Around 60 motorised army vehicles were on display and included aircraft, the police helicopter, as well as those used by mine-clearing experts, who are deployed around 300 times annually.
Colonel Alain Schoeben commanded the parade and troops, which the Grand Duke, accompanied by the Hereditary Grand Duke and Prince Sébastien, personally inspected. Also present were Minister of Defence Yuriko Backes and Minister for Home Affairs Léon Gloden, who is in charge of the police.
The military band, led by Lieutenant Colonel Jean-Claude Braun, played Luxembourg's national anthem, Ons Heemecht, as well as the Grand Ducal anthem De Wilhelmus. The brass band from Rambrouch with its 100 musicians also delivered a memorable performance of the national anthem later on.
The parade culminated in a military festival at Place de Metz, where army vehicles remain on display until Sunday evening.
