Esch-sur-Alzette local official Pim Knaff is once again at the centre of a controversial debate among the municipal council.

The DP politician Pim Knaff was recently found guilty of aggravated tax fraud for failing to declare income from a bankruptcy case he handled as a lawyer. However, he signalled his intentions to continue serving as a local elected official and had no plans to resign.

On Friday morning, The Left's Marc Baum put forward a motion for Knaff to resign from the Esch council, but mayor Christian Weis refused to allow the vote to go ahead, saying the measure was not covered by municipal law.

In an interview with RTL, Baum said the council could have been able to establish an important position if the vote had been permitted. The motion asked for Knaff to resign of his own accord, so even if a vote had taken place, the politician would have had to make the decision voluntarily.

Baum added that the motion would have restored trust in politics and would have given Knaff the opportunity to restore trust on behalf of local residents. He said it was "scandalous" that Weis had blocked the motion.
