The CHL's PET scanner (positron emission tomography) has broken down eight times so far in 2024. Last year the machine failed 13 times.

Minister of Health and Social Security Martine Deprez said the machine, which is commonly used for cancer patients, had already broken down eight times this year, with the most recent issue occurring on Tuesday. The problem resulted in nearly 100 appointments being rescheduled.

The CHL's PET scanner is the only one of its kind in Luxembourg and is designed to handle up to 20 appointments per day. However, due to increased demand, it now handles around 35 patients per day. Last December, the Chamber of Deputies approved the purchase of a second machine.

In response to a parliamentary question submitted by the CSV's Max Hengel, Deprez wrote that the new machine had been authorised on Thursday and would be ordered as soon as possible.

"It should be operational by the end of the year," she wrote. "Until then, I express my sympathy to all patients who have experienced delays as a result of the outages and now have to wait even longer for their results. I hope we can make amends in December."

In order to accommodate the delays due to the latest breakdown, additional appointments have been added every day. The PET scanner will also open on three Saturdays over the next month as an exception.
