Luxembourg commits €70 million to support Ukraine in 2024, as EU and NATO leaders assess ongoing needs amid a €15 billion shortfall in the European Defence Agency's assistance fund.

Luxembourg will maintain high levels of support for Ukraine throughout 2024, according to Minister of Defence Yuriko Backes. The Ministry has earmarked a budget of €70 million for this purpose.

Minister Backes on Tuesday attended a council meeting of EU defence ministers in Brussels. During the meeting, the ministers held an informal discussion with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, and Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov provided an update on the latest developments in the war.

In addition, it was announced that the European Defence Agency's special EU assistance fund for Ukraine currently totals €5 billion. This amount still remains below the initially planned €20 billion, which is considered necessary for long-term support of Ukraine.
