Car sales in LuxembourgSecond-hand prices increasing, but selling better than ever

RTL Today
Not a huge surprise, and the numbers show it: the second-hand car market is becoming more dynamic than the sales of new cars in the country.

Although second hand car prices have risen, 59,000 second-hand cars were registered, 10,000 more than new cars.

However, people’s taste stays the same in both trades: cars by VW are still the most popular, if we take into account “for sale” advertisements. In this ranking, VW is followed by German brands such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes, with Skoda, Porsche, and Ford coming up right behind.

Used cars have become more expensive over the years: the average for a used car in 2020 was around €26,000 – now the average price is close to €38,000.

The high demand and rising prices of electric cars have contributed to this price increase.

Additionally, the mileage of used cars has decreased: nowadays the average distance is around 51,000 KM, compared to the near 65,000 KM from two years ago.

Despite increasing demand, hybrid and electric cars only make out a small portion of used car sales: last year 57,000 petrol and diesel cars had been advertised, in comparison to 6,000 electric/hybrid cars.
